Teffgrass is a warm season, annual grass with fine stems. It is a bunch grass with a large crown root system and many tillers, so it produces a shallow massive fibrous root system. Teffgrass is broadly adapted tolerating a range of soils and conditions from drought to water-logged. It is highly demanded for horses rivaling timothy for quality but with more attractive color and feel. Aside from forage, it can also be used as a cover crop for green manure or erosion-control. Teffgrass is generally considered a low-input crop requiring only moderate amounts of most nutrients. Teffgrass seed is incredibly small, so it is critical to not seed it too deep. The 1/8 - 1/4” seeding depth cannot be stressed enough. A firm seedbed is essential with good control of depth. It can be broadcasted, and we recommend using a Brillion grass seed/cultipacker combination or a spinner type grass seeder. The ideal seeding date in the Northern climates is May and June once frost is no longer a threat, as it is very sensitive to frost. For maximum forage quality, we recommend to mow or swath before the seed heads emerge. Leave 3 - 4” of stubble so that it will quickly regrow. The subsequent cuttings should be ready every 30 - 40 days depending on heat accumulation. In the Northern Climates, 3 - 4 cuttings per year have been reported.
