Collards are a cool season, annual broadleaf that is a great component of grazing mixtures. In order for collards to go into their reproductive stage and produce seeds, commonly known as 'bolting', they have to vernalize. This means that during their first growing season they will remain vegetative which makes it so beneficial for forage mixes because it will only focus on producing biomass, and not producing seed. Since it is a brassica it will also do a great job of reducing soil compaction and creating root channels deep into the soil.
